About Axios - Loudias - Aliakmonas Wetlands (Regional)

The Axios - Loudias - Aliakmonas Wetlands Regional Protected Area, located in the plains of Central Macedonia in northern Greece, includes extensive river deltas and marshlands formed by the Axios (Vardar), Loudias, and Aliakmonas rivers. This lowland wetland zone covers valuable habitats such as reed beds, freshwater lakes, and river channels feeding into the Thermaic Gulf on the Aegean Sea. The wetlands are recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance due to their diverse flora and fauna, especially for hosting numerous migratory bird species during their seasonal journeys between Europe and Africa. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, including species such as flamingos, herons, and European otters. The area also supports a variety of fish, amphibians, and plant life that thrive in wetland environments, making it an important site for ecological research and conservation. Historically, the wetland has played a critical role in local agriculture and fishing economies, with traditional practices that coexist alongside conservation efforts. Visitor activities focus on birdwatching, canoeing, educational trails, and guided nature tours. Several observatories and hides provide excellent vantage points for wildlife watching. The region attracts nature lovers and scientists alike for its role in protecting critical wildlife habitats within a Mediterranean climatic zone. Accessibility is provided by nearby towns and road networks, while infrastructure remains focused on sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Seasonal flooding sustains the dynamic ecosystems, creating a natural space of significant environmental and recreational value.
